Lucy is pregnant and has cravings - Part II

In I Love Lucy’s season 2 episode Ricky Has Labor Pains, Lucy sends Ricky downtown to get her pistachio ice cream, hot fudge, and sardines.

Lucy recalls the scene:

When I did a pregnancy show it called for ice cream and sardines. And we had to get close-ups in the bed after he’d gone all the way downtown to get me ice cream with sardines on it with chocolate sauce. So, I felt, what can I possibly… I’ve got to take six or eight gulps of this, so I said mashed potatoes and brown gravy and then the little silver sardines. Because the sardines had to show and they had to come out of the can with the oil. I don’t think I’ve eaten sardines since. 

Is this pregnant/craving weird things stereotype ever true?
